Straightening a 1940s Land Rover Axle Casing
An axle casing belonging to a late-1940s Land Rover had become distorted at both ends, with one end considerably worse than the other.
The casing was set up in our lathe so that its alignment could be accurately measured using a dial indicator. Controlled heat shrinking was then used to straighten it and bring both ends back into alignment.
Throughout the process, the alignment was carefully monitored to ensure the necessary correction was achieved. The repair enabled the original axle casing to be retained and returned to use.
The first Land Rover was launched in 1948, marking the beginning of a vehicle that would become an iconic part of British motoring history. This repair helped preserve an original component from one of the earliest examples.
Skimming Original Vintage Bristol Bus Brake Drums
Two original brake drums from a privately owned vintage Bristol bus were brought into our workshop after showing signs of wear. The internal braking surfaces had become worn and uneven, causing significant vibration.
Both brake drums were set up in the lathe and carefully skimmed to remove the old, worn surfaces and restore smooth, even braking surfaces.
Most importantly, the work allowed the original brake drums to be retained. This is particularly desirable when maintaining a historic vehicle, where replacement parts may prove difficult to source and preserving originality is important.
Repairing Historic Vehicle Components
These two very different jobs demonstrate how specialist machining and engineering repairs can help extend the working life of historic vehicle components.
