The Importance of Personal Protective Equipment

Personal Protective Equipment isn’t a very exciting subject, but it’s important and could be the difference between life and death.

PPE comes last in the hierarchy of control (which lists in importance the controls that should be put into place to mitigate risks). This puts the onus onto every single business to determine if PPE is required and to implement the necessary risk assessments.

On the 6th April 2022 the Personal Protective Equipment at Work 1992 Regulations were amended to safeguard casual workers. They state that suitable PPE must be provided free of charge by employers to casual workers and not just limited to employees.

If PPE is required, the employer and senior managers must ensure it is used and maintained correctly and kept in date. Everyone who uses PPE must have the necessary training, instructions and information on using and storing it correctly.

Bottom line, PPE is the last level of protection in the workplace.
