Refurbishment And Overhaul Of 1000mm Eddy Current Rotor Assembly
Project Overview
This project involved the full refurbishment and overhaul of a 1000mm eddy current separator (ECS) rotor assembly for a recycling facility in Ireland.
Scope of works included:
• Removal of the existing Kevlar wrap from the eddy shaft
• Full clean-down and inspection of the rotor assembly
• Filling of all gaps using specialist eddy current magnet filler
• Careful rub-down and preparation of the shaft for re-wrapping
• Re-wrapping of the rotor with Kevlar
• Cleaning and preparation of bearings for re-assembly
• Fabrication of new pedestal upstands
• Refitting of bearing collars and pedestal upstands to the drum
• Full reassembly of the rotor assembly
• Full clean-down and inspection of the rotor assembly

• Full reassembly of the rotor assembly
The rotor was re-wrapped in Kevlar, providing high-strength containment of the magnet assembly and ensuring structural integrity at operational speeds. Eddy current rotors run at high speed, so the Kevlar wrap plays a critical role in safely securing the internal magnet system.
Outcome
Following workshop refurbishment, our Workshop Manager transported the completed rotor to site in Northern Ireland and carried out installation over a weekend to minimise plant downtime and support a rapid return to operation.
The successful overhaul and weekend installation ensured the plant returned to service with minimal disruption. It reflects Blaker Engineering’s hands-on approach to heavy engineering support for the recycling sector, combining technical expertise, fabrication capability and a commitment to reducing downtime where it matters most.
