Project Overview
 
Blaker Engineering recently carried out the repair and rebuild of a shear unit at our West Sussex workshop. The equipment operates within a waste metal recycling plant and had experienced significant cracking to the lower jaws.

Background

Shears play a key role in waste metal recycling plants, reducing and preparing material for downstream processing. Due to the nature of the material being processed, the lower jaws are subjected to constant impact and high levels of wear.
 
Over time, this had resulted in cracking to the lower jaws, requiring immediate attention to prevent further deterioration and potential failure.

Work Undertaken

The unit was fully stripped and assessed to determine the extent of the damage. 
 
The repair process included removing the cracked lower jaws and grinding back the affected areas to prepare for welding. 
The jaws were then rebuilt using Hardox wear plate to improve durability in high-wear areas.
 
Welding was carried out in multiple passes to achieve full penetration through the prepared joint, ensuring strength and structural integrity throughout the repair.
