Restoring a Damaged Trailer Axle Thread
A haulage customer recently brought an HGV trailer axle into our workshop after one end of the axle suffered thread damage.
Rather than replacing the complete axle, we were able to repair the thread, providing a commercially sound alternative to a costly and time-consuming replacement.
The Axle Repair Process
The damaged thread was first machined before being built up by one of our welders.
Once the build-up was complete, the axle was re-machined to its original dimensions using our large center lathe. A new thread was then screw cut to the correct specification before the repair underwent final inspection to ensure a good fit and finish.
Our photographs show the axle during the machining stage of the repair.
A Practical Alternative to Axle Replacement
Damage to axle threads does not always mean that a complete axle needs replacing.
Where the component is suitable for repair, specialist machining techniques can provide a reliable and cost-effective solution, helping operators minimise downtime while extending the service life of existing components.
At Blaker Engineering, we carry out HGV and trailer axle repairs from our fully equipped workshop in West Sussex, supporting customers across the commercial vehicle and haulage sectors.
