Blaker keeps New Zealand traction engine rolling
New collar spacers plasma cut for visiting 8nhp Burrell steam engine
Phil Kerr’s 1910 Burrell road locomotive was shipped over from New Zealand last year for the 50th anniversary of the Great Dorset Steam Fair.
This year it has been booked into numerous steam shows before finally ending up at the Great Dorset Steam Fair at the end of August as a static exhibit in the main exhibitor’s tent.
Straight after the show the engine will be taken to a yard in Shaftsbury and disassembled. The back and front wheels will be removed and the engine mounted onto a frame and slid into a container ready for shipping.
The first steam show of the season this year for Phil was Woodcote, near Reading. A few days before the show Phil noticed the front wheels were floating on the axle and we were contacted to help at short notice. We measured the hubs and plasma cut two collar spacers for the front wheels. The spacers took up the end float on the front axle and worked a treat. Have a look at Phil on his Burrell in action at Woodcote pulling a car in half!
